The weekend before Tet, as I was following my own directions to make a batch of banh chung, so was Tam Ngo. She followed the recipe in my cookbook, Into the Vietnamese Kitchen (Ten Speed Press, 2006) and posted an adaptation of the recipe (actually, it's very similar to the published version) on Serious Eats, one of the best food sites and ezines.
As a cookbook author and someone advocating for good Vietnamese home cooking, Tam's post is music to my ears! Check out her work and make a batch now or bookmark it for next year's Lunar New Year celebration. (We celebrate on the same day as Chinese New Year!)

I agree, Tam Ngo is awesome, and she loves great Vietnamese food. You should check out her Flickr site for her trip to Vietnam! Also, I can't wait for your second cookbook, I love your first one!

Thanks for the tip, Passionate Eater.
Charlie, which photo are you looking to copy?

Hi Andrea,
I'm going to try this recipe for Tet this year...but I'd like to try it with the banana filling. Do you know where I can find a recipe for the banana filling? One blog says that the steaming will turn the banana dark purple, but I think it must be stewed or something first?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I have both your "Into the..." and new "Asian Dumplings" books -- love them!
