Now that the book’s been out for a couple months and lots of people are talking about banh mi, I feel like it’s time for me to unleash something super fun – a photo contest. I’ve been waiting to entice you to join in celebrating banh mi by (1) taking a fun selfie with one or (2) snapping a beauty shot of your sandwich.
You can buy the sandwich or make it yourself. You can rope others in with a group shot. Together, with these photos, we can tell the story of banh mi as it is unfolding right now.
The goofy selfies here are from the past few days. To inspire you, I took some this weekend with my husband Rory. They were hilariously fun. We went to San Jose’s Little Saigon and ate four banh mi, then Rory wanted a giant bowl of pho.
Btw, I talked to a banh mi shop owner about selling to Vietnamese people who sometimes try to bargain down his prices. He said that they also complain about how he charges $5 for an 18-inch long sandwich that can feed two or three people. I should have taken a selfie with him to add to our conversation on banh mi prices. Next time. I’m telling you this to seed some selfie ideas...
Then on Monday morning, I made the coconut curry tofu from the handbook and made banh mi for us for lunch. Again, I took some photos that I worked into the banner image for the contest. My banh mi selfies are not overly serious. I imagine you can do better.
For example, here's a banh mi beauty that I reposted on Instagram by @misobarb. She could enter this in the contest:
So what are you waiting for? Get the lowdown on the contest – how to enter, important deadlines, rules and policies.
You may enter via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. You do not have to have a Facebook account to see all the photos. With Twitter and Instagram, you use #banhmiselfie hashtag to enter your photo; it's pretty easy as last night, two entries came in via Instagram.
What is the prize? There are prizes for five winners who'll be picked by open voting. Each of the five winner will receive a copy of The Banh Mi Handbook and an awesome apron that my mom is making right now. Yes, she’s 80 years old and is ready to pitch in for the sake of Vietnamese food and cooking. If you have the book already, remember that it also makes a great gift!
Because of the limits of this website, I’m using a different site to host the contest. Get started by jumping over to The #BanhMiSelfie Contest page.
